Maybe you’ve had the chance to travel to some of these places, if so, please share your recommendations for fun things to do in the comments section of this blog post! Today I want to share with you five fun things to do in San Francisco!
San Francisco, California
The City by the Bay, San Francisco, is the cultural center and a leading financial hub of the San Francisco Bay area and Northern California. San Francisco is a popular tourist destination known for its cool summers, fog, steep rolling hills and famous landmarks. These are some of the reasons why it is one of my favorite city’s to visit. There is so much to do and the weather is wonderful!
Top 5 Most Fun Things to do in San Francisco
1. Bike the Golden Gate Bridge!
Bike riding across the bridge is a fun and enjoyable activity for the beginner to the advanced rider. It is approximately a nine mile bike ride. There are many convenient places to rent bicycles, and it is very easy to get to the scenic bike path from the Fisherman’s Wharf area. Fun things to do in San Francisco while you bike are to enjoy the spectacular views as you ride over the amazing bridge and visit the town of Sausalito. Once you cross the bridge, there is a sidewalk for you to coast downhill into the town of Sausalito for a wonderful lunch overlooking the water. You also have the option to return to the city on a ferry boat! The ferry boats have bike storage so you can sit back, relax and enjoy the beautiful city views.
2. Visit the Muir Woods.
Walking and hiking through the Muir woods are fun things to do in San Francisco. The Muir woods are the site of a virgin forest of California redwood trees, among the oldest and tallest on earth. These woods are a national monument and one of the most peaceful places I have ever been. You will take pleasure in breathing the crisp, clean, cool air. I highly recommend taking the opportunity to roam through the ancient forest of giant redwood trees. The tall trees are amazing. You will find yourself gazing up in awe, yet discovering it a very peaceful place. There are plenty of walking/hiking paths throughout this national forest. It is a wonderful place to take family of all ages!
3. Take a Wine Tour.
Fun things to do in San Francisco are scheduling wine tours in Napa Valley or Sonoma. There are so many wonderful wine tasting packages to choose from. I chose a package that included the Muir Woods tour combined with a half day wine tour in Sonoma. It was perfect! A shuttle picked us up at the hotel and we were back in San Francisco in time to enjoy a late dinner! We tasted wines at several small and medium production wineries. It was interesting listening to the vineyard owners and learning the stories of their heritage. You will also learn the proper way to taste wines, and I found out what swirl, sniff and spit is just the right way! You will be surprised when you really like a wine that you didn’t think you would!
4. Visit Alcatraz.
Alcatraz is one of the most famous prisons in the country for housing notorious criminals. Fun things to do in San Francisco are getting tickets for the ferryboat ride and taking the Alcatraz Night Tour. The prison is located in the middle of San Francisco Bay. Tours of the prison are available in the day or night. I highly recommend getting tickets for the night tour. You will take a self guided tour, and with the aid of headphones, you can listen to narrated stories. On the night tour, many of the rooms, such as the dining hall are faintly lit by moonlight making it a little more eerie. You will see the inside of the prison cells, and hear the story of how the inmates tricked the prison guards the night they escaped from Alcatraz. Overall this was a very cool experience!
5. Visit Fisherman’s Wharf.
The Fisherman’s Wharf neighborhood encompasses the Northern Waterfront area of San Francisco. This historic waterfront area offers many fun things to do in San Francisco. There is a range of hotels, specialty restaurants, famous attractions, unique shops, breathtaking scenery and entertainment for the entire family. Although some attractions have a fee, there are a number of free attractions as you walk through the Wharf neighborhood. I enjoyed visiting the Ghirardelli Chocolate Shop and Café and strolling down PIER 39 to see the world famous sea lions. Here you can also watch the fishermen transport seafood from the fishing boats to vendors and the wholesalers throughout the Wharf.
