gardening ornamentIf you love gardening, then you probably know that April is recognized as National Garden Month!   April showers bring May flowers so don’t let the rain get you down, get your gardening supplies out and start planting!  With the weather getting warmer, now is the perfect time to consider how you can make your own personal garden or your community a greener more beautiful space.

Gardening is Fun!  Here’s 4 Ways to Celebrate National Garden Month!

  1. Organize a neighborhood wide event.  The more people involved the more fun it can be!  Take the lead on gathering neighbors to tackle a neglected local park or other public space.  Your team can start by picking up garbage and debris that has accumulated over the winter months. Divide the volunteers up, some can rake and mow the grass and others can prune the shrubs and plant some flowers.  It will look beautiful and will be a nice improvement to your community.

  2. Organize parents and students at your local school to spruce up the grounds in front of the school.  First impressions are everything!  Parents can donate flats of flowers and the students can help plant them.  Have the kids wear their rain boots and bring watering cans.  Even the little kids can find an important job to do!  With a large group it will not take long.  Plan this gardening event for a Saturday or Sunday morning in April, to celebrate National Garden Month.  The kids will take pride in knowing they helped make their school a better place!

  3. Have a gardening contest with your family.  Call the contest Race to the Sky with Vines!  Have each family member plant a different type of flowering vine along the side of your house.  Be sure to mark the course to compare growth.  Wait to see which sprouts first, takes off and who wins.  Don’t forget to water and fertilize for good competition.

  4. Gear up and go shopping for your gardening materials.  Creating a garden space or maintaining one that already exists can be a challenge if you do not have the right supplies.  Treat yourself to some new pruning shears, kneeling pad or gardening gloves!
