longest day of year - sunshine

Living here in Chicago we wait, what seems like an eternity, for summer to arrive! We officially welcome summer here on June 21st. Our Summer solstice is on Saturday, June 21 at 5:51am and the sun will set at 8:29pm. The length of this day is 15 hours, 13 minutes and 43 seconds of daylight! As opposed to December 21, the winter solstice and shortest day of the year, 9 hours, 8 minutes, a difference in daylight of 6 hours and 5 minutes! It is very exciting to think about what we can do with these extra hours of daylight! Here are 5 fun ways to celebrate the longest day of the year!

5 Ways to Celebrate the Longest Day of the Year

When daylight savings time ends in the fall, it gets dark here around 4:00 in the afternoon! Outdoor activities are limited due to the darkness. Also, thanks to the Polar Vortex, we had a long winter that brought brutally cold temperatures and a cooler spring than normal. For these reasons, the longest day of the year on June 21stcannot come soon enough!   Here are some fun ways to celebrate the extra hours of daylight!

1)  Play golf in the late afternoon.

You will have fun playing after work, enjoying the cooler temperatures, and saving a little money! Take advantage of the cheaper twilight golf rates that many of the golf courses offer on the longest day of the year. Usually twilight rates start at three o’clock in the afternoon. Some courses even offer a super twilight rate that begins at five o’clock.

2)  Play games outside

Get the neighborhood kids together and plan some outdoor activities. On the longest day of the year it will stay light out long enough for a wiffle ball game to go into extra innings! A fun activity they can do to welcome summer is making tie dye tee shirts. With the extra daylight the shirts can be left outside to dry, and the shirts design will resemble a sun burst!

3)  Make a bonfire

The summer solstice was traditionally celebrated by dancing around bonfires. Let friends and family collect the sticks for the fire and use some of those sticks to roast marshmallows to make delicious s’mores!

4)  Attend an outdoor concert

Just outside of Chicago we have an outdoor music venue called Ravinia. A variety of bands and performers play at this venue. It has covered outdoor pavilion seating, or guests can choose to sit on the lawn. When seated on the lawn, concert goers bring in their own tables, chairs, food and drinks. The longest day of the year will provide the extra daylight for eating your picnic dinner before you need to eat by candlelight!

5)  Cook outside

To celebrate the longest day of the year, invite friends over for al fresco dining. Begin the evening with some summer cocktails and grill some tropical flavored marinated beef or lime chicken. There’s nothing as tasty as grilled food! Keep the cooking to a minimum with already prepared side salads. Your deck or patio will provide the perfect setting to enjoy the evening breeze and watch the late summer sunset.

As you can see, there are some simple ways to welcome summer and to celebrate the longest day of the year. It is definitely a day to celebrate here in Chicago!
